Authenticity
I have a confession – I have always thought that Pret A Manger sandwiches are great. They focus on making great sandwiches from ingredients carefully sourced using as much organic content as possible.
They obviously understand what their customers like, because they are booming in the current downturn. So let’s look at some of the key facts – their sandwiches are great value, but not cheap. They use great ingredients and carefully monitor customers preferences and trends in lunch/sandwich requirements.
Another key factor is their social responsibility. They give away unused sandwiches to the homeless rather than throw them away. Last year they gave away 2.4 million sandwiches. This is great corporate social responsibility. For many customers it also means that they have the satisfaction of knowing that the homeless can share in the experience of having a tasy well made sandwich.
This is a great example of complete authenticity between the brand, its customers and the wider aspects of society. There are many lessons to be learned and I hope that Pret A Manger keeps its core values without dilution to chase profitability.
