Success and Significance Part 2

Success is often associated with people who feel they have everything they want so in that respect you could say that it is often materially based. The success may be visible to all, so in effect success means that you have added value to yourself and by relationships and association, some people around you.

However significance is when you hit the top of the Maslow needs pyramid, because you feel so comfortable and confident about your own success that you can now seek to add value to others.
Sports stars are great examples of this process in action. Some end their careers (perhaps prematurely through injury) and then fail to adapt to their new situation. They miss the previous trappings of success and often decline into a “vicious spiral” which may involve alcohol and drugs. Fortunately many others are inspired to reinvent themselves, to a new sustainable level of success, but that still leaves the “what’s next?” question.

Bill Gates (irrespective of whether you love his software!) created a massive level of success that carried with it huge financial success. In the process you can also say he provided many others with opportunity as employees and partners of Microsoft. So what did he do to? He created the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation with a view to giving away a sizeable portion of their wealth to help others. Warren Buffet and more recently Richard Branson have also committed to giving away at least half of their wealth. They are doing this because they have nothing left to prove to themselves or others in the fact that they are successful businesspeople and entrepreneurs.

They are sharing the fruits of their success and are not holding on to wealth just to make sure that they qualify for the next millionaire/billionaire list.

Just a suggestion, but perhaps in order to start moving from success to significance and the desire to add value to others, that you have to:
  • ·      really know your purpose in life (and we know how well they teach that in schools, colleges and the workplace)
  • ·      have a strong desire and a clear vision to be more than you currently are, by growing towards your maximum potential
  • ·      begin planting the seeds that will benefit others by providing them with their own means to grow ”harvests”

Significance, like success is not an overnight journey – it takes time, but it does require steadfast commitment, passion and a strong sense of purpose and direction. Becoming significant will most likely take you from a place of comfort into the great unknown, but that is what makes it challenging and exciting.

In short it is about signing up to something that is bigger than we think we are. But if we start to make the stretch, when we get to the final account we can say we truly lived, loved and made a difference.

Fast Goal Setting For Dummies

Fast Goal setting for dummies – Part 1

You know what – goal setting can be fun!

First of all you need to identify your personal values which will then enable you to set goals to reflect those values.  There is absolutely no point in having goals if you don’t identify what makes you tick. Everyone can say they want a big house, car, boat but you have to identify why!

Easier said than done? Sure it is – it’s easy!

To start all you need is a pen, paper and a willingness to be honest. This is to do with you, no-one else. You should allow at least 30 minutes to accomplish your task.

 So, ready, steady,  go ……

1.       You need to be relaxed, nothing will be accomplished if you are tense. Make sure you are on your own in a quiet relaxed atmosphere. Maybe put some mood music on, even meditate for a few minutes, just to clear your mind.

2.       Ask yourself a question at a time and, no cheating, be honest.
(a)    First question – if you knew Doomsday was about to occur, what would you want to achieve.
(b)   Second question – describe the person that you believe you are when you are at your absolute peak. Use adjectives, colours whatever you like to describe yourself
(c)    Third question – who would you say was your role model and why?
(d)   At the end of your life, how do you want to be remembered?

Now if you have been honest, then you should have an idea of what matters to you i.e. your values!

3.       So now, lets start to identify your goals using your values
(a)     What do you love doing, what makes you happy?
(b)   What would your dream life be? Don’t hold back on this one.
(c)    What are you great at? What’s your USP?
(d)   What would you do if you were guaranteed to succeed

For Section 3 you may need to divide out your life into personal, career and helping others. In personal you should include relationships (family, friends and partner), health and fitness, hobbies and just sheer pleasure! For career incorporate your ideal worklife, money, colleagues, company, working for yourself? In the “helping others” include what you would like to give back to the world, ie. What charitable acts would you like to achieve?

So looking at all of these you should now be able to write down  at least 3 goals for each section (and hopefully more!). Look at them closely, are they really, really what YOU dream of – again be honest. There is absolutely no point in setting goals if they mean nothing to you and you have only included them because you think you should.

Check your goals against your values – do they match?

Part 2 will be how you bring these goals to fruition – watch this space.

Entrepreneurship and doing what you love

Entrepreneurship and doing what you love

Some people go into business for themselves by buying franchises and other “off the shelf” business models. Providing the established methodology is used then success should ensue. But what about when it is your business idea? The one that came into your head and you are now running with it?
Passion can only result when you are driven and have a clear vision of what you want. You have to love what you are doing to really establish that passion. We are talking about the kind of passion that fires you and anyone else around you and those you communicate with. Passion is infectious; its presence in you will be detected by all those with whom you come into contact.

In other words it helps you sell your dream and aspirations onto others. All of the recognized entrepreneurs have passion about their business. We often call such characters charismatic as well. The main thing is, it is all about loving what you do and where you are heading.

A reality check for any business you intend to start, or currently have is what is your current level of passion for what you are doing? If you don’t feel excited you may be in the wrong business and have swapped a run of the mill job for something else that is just another routine

Definition Creativity

 Definition Creativity and
Personal Vision
Definition Creativity

A personal vision is an important step in any creative process. When it comes to setting our own personal goals, it is essential because it allows for alignment. What I mean by alignment is after the visioning process you know what is most important to you and you can go ahead and create a vision statement for your life. Once you have the vision you can easily see whether a goal is aligned to that vision or not. If it is not aligned go ahead and cross it out because it is really unlikely that you will accomplish it.

So how do we do visioning – visioning is an internal process. So you must quieten you mind and get into a meditative state – ask yourself what is most important to me at this time? What is it I really love doing and who in fact loves me etc. Do not be judgmental and see what comes up. Write down anything that comes up and then when your session is finished review what you have written and again see how you feel about it.

You are really trying to find messages and echoes of from your imagination, which is why getting into a meditative state is so important. Once you have these envisioned thoughts you can create your own vision statement and from that goal setting is not only aligned but also much easier.
